The Software Secret Behind My Crash-Free Live Sets

Hey friends,

If you caught Part 1 of my live set breakdown, you already know what's happening on the hardware side with my Push 3 and Moog Subsequent 25. Now it's time for the software side - what's actually going on inside Ableton Live during my performances.

Quick note: the template from this video is available on my Patreon. No stems included, but all the performance rack mappings are there as a blueprint for your own live set.

Why I Bounced Everything to Audio

This single change transformed my entire approach. When I was running software synths with all their effects chains during performances, my MacBook would occasionally crash. Not ideal when you're in the middle of a set.

Since switching to audio-only stems, I haven't had a single crash during a live set. Knock on wood. The freed-up CPU lets me run all my performance effects without worrying - because computer crashes is the least thing you want to worry about when you are on stage.

Instrument Groups and Send FX

The session is organized into instrument groups, each containing audio stems for that element. The Moog Sub 25 runs on its own track with a dedicated FX chain.

I split my send effects into two categories: performance FX for real-time mix manipulation, and sound FX for traditional processing on specific elements like the Sub 25. Keeping these separate makes everything more controllable during a set.

The KVNDRA Performance Rack

This is where things get fun. My performance rack breaks down into a few key components:

The DJ Filter handles classic high-pass and low-pass filtering on a single macro. The Looper captures and manipulates loops on the fly - one of my favorite tools for unexpected moments. Fade to Grey gradually washes out the mix while bringing in new elements, perfect for smooth endings. And the Performer handles additional macro mappings, such as FX sends and bringing in transition loops.

Get the Template

If you want to use this as your starting point, the template is available on my Patreon - either as a one-time purchase or included in the Level 4 subscription tier with many other templates and full projects.

Stay creative,

Milan (KVNDRA)
