How to Actually Connect External Synths to Push 3 Standalone

Hey friends,

Here's something that frustrated me for weeks: my Moog Mother-32 refused to communicate with my Push 3 Standalone. All cables connected, settings checked, still nothing.

The culprit? A tiny adapter that nobody talks about.

The MIDI Type A Problem

Push 3 needs MIDI Type A adapters. Not Type B. They look identical, but use different wiring standards. I spent hours troubleshooting settings when the real issue was a ten-euro adapter. Once I switched to Type A, everything worked perfectly.

The Simple Setup

My current process:

  • Audio cable from synth output to Push 3 Input 1

  • MIDI cable with Type A adapter from Push 3 MIDI Out to synth MIDI In

  • In Push settings: Enable "Track" in MIDI output section

  • Add External Instrument device to your MIDI track

  • Match MIDI channels between Push and your synth

That's it. Now your external synth works like any software instrument on Push 3.

A Gamechanger

This setup changed my ambient live performances completely. I can layer the Mother-32's analog warmth with Push 3's flexibility, add generative sequencers, and have everything sync perfectly. The Push 3's built-in audio interface means my entire rig connects with just two cables to any system.

If you're building your own Push 3 standalone setup, I just released a full video walkthrough showing exactly how I connect my Mother-32, including settings, troubleshooting, and how I use it in my ambient template.

Stay creative,
Milan (KVNDRA)
